Set on the edge of Embleton Village, on what was once voted the most romantic bay in England and close to the popular villages of Craster, renowned for its smoked kippers, and Beadnell with its water sports and Newton-by-the-Sea with its National Trust beach and micro brewery. Alnwick is only 7 miles with its majestic castle (used in the Harry Potter films), lots of cobbled streets, enchanting gardens, playhouse, inns and restaurants. Dunstanburgh Castle in nearby Craster makes a lovely walk along the cliff top, reached only by foot. Finish off with fresh seafood on the way back in one of the many fine and friendly pubs dotted along the coast. Seahouses known for its fine fish and chips and small working harbour is always a visitor’s favourite. Holy Island is not to be missed but check the tides first or take a boat trip over to the Farne Islands to see the puffins or seals whilst in Seahouses. Embleton village has a friendly pub and restaurant, garage, post office, well-equipped children’s park and magnificent sandy bay. A beach hut is also available to hire in Newton-by-the-Sea (an NT beach) by arrangement with the owner. For properties MVB, MVF and MVE only, there is membership of the local, private leisure facilities and guests are welcome to use the pool, gym and spa at cost.

Accommodation overview: This imposing Edwardian country house has been fully refurbished to a high standard and stands in its own garden overlooking sheep grazing the common at Goathland, whilst the views of moors and forest may be enjoyed from the west-facing terrace. Set in the village of Goathland, perhaps better known as Aidensfield from the TV series Heartbeat, in the heart of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, it is in an excellent area for walking – the North Yorks Moors steam railway stops at the village station on its journey from Pickering to Grosmont.
Whitby (9 miles) is a picturesque seaport famous for its Captain Cook connections, where the cobbled streets and yards stand in the shadow of the Abbey, overlooking the harbour. The three miles of sandy beaches lead to the pretty coastal village of Sandsend. Robin Hood’s Bay (renowned as a bygone smugglers’ haunt), Runswick Bay and Staithes are all worth a visit. Inland, the moors are scattered with villages, many with excellent inns. Goathland itself offers an excellent choice of inns and restaurants, in addition to a local shop. Scarborough 23 miles. Accommodation overview: On the edge of the North York Moors National Park, this delightful 18th-century cottage overlooks its own mature gardens in a private and secluded setting, yet is only 200 yards from the heart of the charming market town of Pickering. Hungate Garden Cottage has been completely renovated and extended to provide very comfortable holiday accommodation for larger parties, with the added benefit of a ground floor twin bedroom and bathroom with shower specially designed for a disabled person or couple. The cottage benefits from all modern amenities, yet retains all the charm and character of its 18th-century origins, with open beams and a log fire.
Hungate Garden Cottage is managed by the same team that looks after all the Hungate Cottages so immaculately . Visitors also enjoy free use of Pickering’s superb public indoor heated swimming pool (200 yards) and two free multi-entry passes to Dalby Forest. Pickering is a friendly town with good shops, inns and restaurants. From here the steam Railway runs across the moors amid stunning scenery, through the unspoilt villages of Levisham and Goathland (‘Aidensfield’ in television’s Heartbeat) to Grosmont. On the coast lies the historic seaport of Whitby (21 miles) with 3 miles of sandy beaches, cobbled streets, ruined Abbey and colourful harbour. Further along, huddled into the cliff-side, are the tiny fishing villages of Staithes, Runswick Bay and Robin Hood’s Bay, once the haunt of smugglers, while the popular resort of Scarborough is 17 miles away, offering excellent theatres, shopping and family entertainment. Accommodation overview: Dating back to the 17th century, this period house was home to the last act of private and domestic warfare in England, possession of the house was fought over by Sir Thomas Metcalfe, known as the Black Knight of Nappa and Mrs Robinson. Thankfully the house now nestles in serenity amongst some of the prettiest scenery to be found in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, within a working farm environment and shooting estate. In an elevated position, the house is well placed for taking in the views not least from the conservatory where visitors can look over the landscaped gardens to the fields and hills beyond, but also down to Semerwater. Carefully restored, the holiday home combines original features with beautifully and sympathetically decorated rooms, which provide ample space for a group of 12 people.
The bustling market town of Hawes is close by, where one can visit the Dales Centre Museum and Creamery, home to Wallace and Gromits favourite cheese.
