Its cobbled market place and hidden alleys are a delight to explore, as is the elegant Church Street, which is considered to be the finest street of Georgian buildings in Derbyshire. Two miles further is the Peak District National Park with picturesque villages of Ilam, Dovedale and Thorpe Cloud as just a small example of the many areas of the park offering attractions including the rock pillars at Ilam Rock, Viators Bridge in Milldale, the Stepping Stones which lead to the limestone carvings at Lovers’ Leap and Reynard’s Cave. There are several trails such as Tissington and High Peak, which weave through the countryside, providing popular recreational walks and cycle paths that follow former railway lines. Carsington Water, with its water sports and visitor centre is also well worth visiting.
