Accommodation overview: COSY BARN CONVERSION SET ON 130 ACRE CATTLE FARM. REGRET NO CHILDREN This new barn conversion is situated on the owner s farmyard 1 mile from the village of Martinstown on the outskirts of Dorchester noted as being home and inspiration to the author Thomas Hardy whose novels Tess of the d Urbervilles and The Mayor of Casterbridge were both based on the town. In 1833 the Tolpuddle Martyrs formed their Friendly Society of Agricultural Labourers and were later arrested and tried in the Shire Hall in Dorchester. This building still remains and is preserved as it was at the time. Prince Charles purpose built village of Poundbury is situated to the west of the town and is visited by HRH several times a year. There is lots to see and do nearby on the hills to the south west of the town stands Hardy s Monument a memorial to the other local Thomas Hardy Sir Thomas Masterman Hardy who served with Lord Nelson. Keen walkers can walk up to the monument and on a clear day enjoy superb views of Weymouth the Isle of Portland and Chesil Beach. The Abbotsbury Swannery is 3 miles away and the Jurassic Coast with its fossil rich beaches and coves is also close by. The seaside resorts of Weymouth and Portland are worth a visit. The property is located in Thomas Hardy country in the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, just outside the pretty village of Hooke and a short drive away from the small town of Beaminster and the beaches and cliffs of Dorset’s Jurassic Coast.
There are excellent walks and cycle rides across the West Dorset countryside directly from the property, with the Iron Age Fort of Eggardon Hill and the nature reserves of Kingcombe and Powerstock Common all nearby, along with many other historic towns and villages. The barn is located on a working sheep farm and guests are welcome to meet and help look after the animals.
A number of good pubs are within a 10 minute drive away such as The Three Horseshoes at Powerstock and the Acorn at Evershot. Also within a 10 minute drive are plenty of local services and conveniences found in either Maiden Newton or Beaminster.
