Superb walking country is on the doorstep, whilst the beautiful valleys of Dove, Goyt, Manifold and Lathkildale are all a short drive away. The stately homes, Chatsworth House and Haddon hall are both well worth a visit and easily reached, whilst other attractions include an otter sanctuary (12 miles), limestone show caves, Alton Towers (30 miles) and the Roaches. Buxton offers two golf courses and tennis courts, whilst sailing can be arranged at the nearby Fernilee reservoir or at Carsington water. Matlock, once a spa town, is now a popular Regency resort and boasts a steam railway, wonderful tow-path walks, cycle trails and canal-boat hire. Along the valley, set among woods and limestone cliffs, is Matlock Bath, where a cable car spans the gorge to the Heights of Abraham. Here are fascinating show caverns demonstrating the earth’s history and the local lead mining industry, dating back to Roman times. Gulliver’s Kingdom provides entertainment for the children, while in the Pavilion there is an aquarium and Lead Mining Museum. Within easy reach are several historic houses to visit. Among them is Chatsworth House, a splendid classical mansion and one of England’s great stately homes, with a fine collection of paintings, sculpture and furniture as well as impressive gardens; and Haddon Hall, a beautifully restored medieval manor house.
Around the Matlocks, the countryside is steeped in history, with many old buildings, Norman churches and stone circles to intrigue the visitor. The Derbyshire Dales boasts some of England’s loveliest river valleys, those of the Derwent, the Wye and the Dove, while the High Peaks offer dramatic and rugged scenery, perfect for walking and riding. Accommodation overview: This large five bedroomed 17th-century character house is set in the heart of the prestigious rural village of Rolleston-on-Dove – first documented in King Edmund’s Charter of 942AD. Overlooking the church and village green, the extended cottage has privacy assured from the very large enclosed landscaped gardens allowing areas for complete relaxation. The Croft is a detached holiday property and is close to an attractive and popular village pub which serves excellent food and wine. Furnished to a very high standard throughout, The Croft has its own cinema room which allows guests the chance to enjoy a movie on a large screen.
