Accommodation overview: The Old Reading Room is a delightful and intimate country retreat set in the heart of this lovelyand peaceful village. The cottage has been lovingly restored to a very high specification from what was originally the old school room where local children would have practised their reading and music. Accommodation overview: Landgate Cottage is a well located holiday cottage situated moments from the Market Square in Stow. The cottage is a very good size for four people, but has the advantage of an extra bed if a fifth person wishes to travel*. The living room is particularly attractive with great views across the well tended (but of course!) allotments and fields beyond. The cottage also has two bathrooms which also make it suitable for two couples just as much for a family. A beautiful and historic ferryman's cottage, the site of which is mentioned in Jerome K. Jerome's Three Men in a Boat, which is situated directly on the banks of the River Thames, adjacent to the Oxford University Rowing Club.
This unique property, which sits on Edwardian brick arches, overlooks its own private riverside garden and pontoon. On the other side of the river is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a working dairy farm.
The house is on the southern edge of the town of Wallingford, just over an hour's drive from London, 15 minutes from Henley and 20 minutes from Oxford.
Until c.1950 the house was occupied by the Wallingford ferryman, who transported horses, people and freight across the river at the point where the River Thames tow path changed sides. The raised outhouse was the ticket booth associated with the ferry.
Wallingford is a pretty medieval market town situated along the banks of the River Thames. The centre of the town is a five minute walk along either the riverside or quiet roads, and has a picturesque town square with a 17th century arcaded town hall, a number of historic inns and restaurants, three ancient churches, the Corn Exchange theatre and cinema, a large Waitrose and a summer outdoor swimming pool. You can also enjoy the Cholsey and Wallingford Steam Railway, or a walk around the ruins of Wallingford Castle, once one of the largest in the country but largely destroyed by Oliver Cromwell.
There is a town museum and Agatha Christie's home and boathouse nearby. Midsomer Murders was filmed in the town. A bus service runs to Oxford and Reading and the stop is only a few minutes walk away.
You will find the house a restful and fun place, surrounded by the quiet of the Thames, with only its water wildlife for company.

Local InformationSomerton is delightful village steeped in history dating back hundreds of years with mentions in the Domesday Book and also links to William The Conqueror after the Battle of Hastings. The church in particular (a Grade One listed building) is relatively famous in local circles for its historical significance. Somerton is no more than 15 mins outside Woodstock, the very popular Oxfordshire market town and just 15 miles from the centre of Oxford. The village also enjoys superb travel links with Bicester train station (to London Marylebone) 10 mins drive away or Junction 10 of the M40 no more than 3 miles away. The village sits on the northern side of the Oxfordshire Cotswolds with the River Cherwell and Oxford Canal both meandering through the edge of the village and just moments from this holiday cottage. The meadows at the river are absolutely perfect for evening 'sun-downers'. There are many walks to choose from, right from your door. The very famous and very popular Bicester Shopping Outlet Centre (or Bicester Village as it is called) is 10 mins away if shopping is your thing. There are a variety of good pubs in the locality, but none in the village. Of particular note is The Falkland Arms in Great Tew, one of the prettiest spots imaginable.
