Accommodation overview: The Lodge at Holycombe is a unique Cotswold holiday cottage set on the edge of the beautiful village of Whichford. Nestling amongst six acres of land, the property is an ideal retreat away from the stresses of hectic life in the city! Holycombe itself is set in a wooded valley where a natural stream rises from a holy well in the nearby wood, passes though the grounds and down a waterfall. (The sound of running water adds to the sense of peace and tranquillity.) A coppice provides shady outdoor space; there's a campfire area and a large stone circle on the castle site. Across a meadow is the ancient Whichford wood with many rare species of trees and plants, an abundance of wood anemones, primroses and bluebells in spring; chestnuts, blackberries and sloes in autumn. Wildlife abounds: everything from Muntjack to polecats and kingfishers. Set in six acres, Holycombe is built in the grounds of a Norman Castle, and has a water-filled moat, habitat for carp and dragonflies. Sally and Andy Birtwell rescued the site from 40 years of being a scrap yard, dedicating 6 years of their life to the restoration. They have built a beautiful house and garden to honour the sacred landscape. Archaeologists have excavated a Roman conduit carrying water from the springs in the wood to the site and dowsers and geomancers have suggested it was a sacred site before Roman the occupation. They also believe that six leylines converge on the stone circle.

Accommodation overview: Cleeveley Cottage is a charming Grade II Listed Cotswold Cottage set in a very picturesque village. The cottage, which dates back to the 16th Century, has undergone considerable renovation creating a stunning holiday home. Internally there many period features incl a Tudor stone fireplace with woodburner, mullion windows and flagstone floors. The cottage enjoys a quiet location down a no-through lane with an enclosed cottage garden to its rear. The hamlet of Holwell is a few miles from Burford. Originally this building is where military bands used to practice (approx 100 years ago!) but today it is a lovely home with many period and contemporary touches such as underfloor heating. Archway Cottage is a delightful cottage which was once part of an old brewery in Milton-under-Wychwood, a delightful Cotswold village. The property was completely renovated a few years ago and is furnished in a contemporary style with an emphasis on modern comfort.
The village has a post office and a small supermarket. It is located a mile from Shipton-under-Wychwood (which has three pubs, the Lamb, the Wychwood Inn and the Shaven Crown.) Also within a 15-minute drive are the top local pubs/restaurants, such as the Feathered Nest in Westcote, the Chequers in Churchill, the Toll House and the Plough can be found in Kingham, which also has the award-winning Daylesford Organic Farm shop and a mainline station to London Paddington.
There are three lovely market towns within 10 miles - Burford, Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Norton. A little further afield are Oxford and Stratford-upon-Avon. Many delightful country house gardens are in the neighbourhood and also many wonderful walks in all directions.
