Accommodation overview: Meadowbrook is part of Meadowcroft Cottages, a small cluster of cottages located in a quiet area for a relaxing holiday at any time of year. Nestling at the end of a leafy lane, the bustling town of Bowness is a mere 15 minutes level walk and the public car ferry and launching area are close by, providing opportunities for exploring Hawkshead, Sawrey and Coniston. Meadowbrook Cottage is neatly presented in a traditional style with all the facilities you have come to expect from our cottages in order for you to fully self cater if required. Melmerby Hall is a Grade II listed manor house nestling in the foothills of the North Pennines, one of 40 classified Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It is set within its own sandstone walled grounds, which are entered through an arched gateway at the edge of the village.
The grounds include an archery lawn, walled vegetable gardens and a Victorian castle folly at the foot of the lawn (now converted to a children's play area). The forested grounds of 20 acres incorporate a small tributary of the River Eden with picnic area and stone barbecue by the stream.
The village of Melmerby is in the Eden Valley, lying between the Pennines and the Lake District, 12 miles from Ullswater and nine miles from the historic market town of Penrith.
There are a number of outstanding walks along the edge of the River Eden. One of England's largest Druidic stone circles - Long Meg and her Daughters - is also close by.
Melmerby is the home of the Egon Ronay award-winning organic village bakery which also serves fantastic meals and takeaway/coffee snacks. The Shepherds Inn at Langwathby, has good reviews for its food, service and friendly atmosphere.
Guests have access to a free swimming voucher programme with the Tower House indoor pool in the village of Melmerby which is a short walk from the property. The Tower House pool has a resistant current lap lane, a sauna and showers. The secluded grounds of the family owned Grade 1 listed Blencowe Hall estate contain these three Grade 2 listed cottages which have been sensitively renovated to a high standard.
In addition to its own private garden, parking and seating areas around the property, also contained within the grounds of Blencowe Hall is a tributary of the River Petterill which has brown trout fishing. Other outdoor pursuits can easily be arranged including salmon fishing, clay pigeon shooting, pony trekking, sailboat hire and cycle tours along the popular C2C cycle route which passes through the village. The fantastic views over the Lakeland Hills and peaceful setting make these cottages ideal for walkers or guests seeking a "get away from it all" location from which they can enjoy the Lake District without being overrun by other visitors. The three properties here Cazenovia Hall, Riverain and Wythburn Cottages are less than four miles from the Lake District National Park.
Blencowe is easily accessible from the Penrith train station (three hours direct from Euston) and a 10 minute taxi ride. It is about four miles from Junction 40 of the M6. Other popular local attractions include Hutton in the Forest and its extensive grounds which are just a few miles away, Lowther Castle, and one of Alfred Wainwright's favourite walks in the Lake District which winds along just above the shores of Ullswater and forms a fantastic loop journey with a leg back along the famous Ullswater Steamers.
A stunning conversion of a coach house dating back to the 1700s gives Riverain its welcoming double height oak floored reception room with floor to ceiling arched windows. The massive sandstone fireplace is a focal point for cool Cumbrian evenings and a generous supply of logs as well as underfloor heating ensures guest comfort and relaxation.
