Bowness is slightly futher boasting St Martin’s Church (notable for its stained glass), and The World of Beatrix Potter. The limestone grey town of Kendal is close by, home to two of Cumbria’s grandest stately homes - Sizergh Castle and Levens Hall. The longest lake in England, Lake Windermere enjoys a dramatic backdrop of wooded slopes and bare fells. Visit the 18th-century dome shaped villa on Belle Isle, the largest of the fourteen islands, which can be reached by ferry. Nearby attractions include a steamboat museum and visitors’ centre at Brockhole.
