Nearby is Blackgang Chine, the UK’s first theme park which dates back to 1843, and on the west side of the island there is another theme park at The Needles, where the rock formations can be seen. The popular Victorian sandy seaside resort of Ventnor is about 15 minutes’ drive, with its pubs, shops and restaurants and promenade/pier where fresh crab and lobster or catch of the day can be purchased. There is plenty to do on this lovely island, including many NT homes and gardens, such as Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Carisbrooke Castle, Osbourne House, the Pearl Centre and Calbourne Water Mill which has 17th century water and stone mills. The house has a sunny south facing terrace and substantial garden. In addition guests will enjoy the use of 15 acres of secluded bluebell woods and pasture leading to a 1-acre lake. Nearer the house there is a smaller lake in a woodland setting where coarse fishing is available. The property has access to an extensive network of footpaths through this unspoilt part of the low weald rich in animals, birds and plant life.
The pretty village of Kirdford has a shop, pub and restaurant and there are numerous country pubs in local villages. The quaint town of Petworth (4 miles) is famous for its stately home, Capability Brown park and antique shops. The charming small town of Midhurst as well as Billingshurst and Haslemere are all within 20 minutes’ drive and have good restaurants and more extensive shopping. Motor racing and horse racing are nearby at Goodwood. Leornardslee and West Dean Gardens, Parham House, the Weald and Downland museum and the South Downs themselves are all close. Chichester (½ hour) has its ancient cathedral, festival theatre, Roman ruins, harbour tours and tearooms. At Arundel the castle and Wildfowl Trust are popular. Wittering and other beaches are half an hour away and there is polo at Midhurst and numerous golf courses within easy reach. Shops 3/4 mile.
