Accommodation overview: In the lawned garden of this attractive and beautifully furnished, detached holiday cottage, a handsome pine building houses an exclusive indoor heated swimming pool and outdoor hot tub. Also in the grounds are swings and a small playhouse for the children. The interior of Victoria Cottage boasts a lovely living room to relax in with a flatscreen TV and open fire.
Its peaceful setting is less than 5 miles from the sea, within the 7-acre wooded grounds of the owners’ home. From Morston (4½ miles), local boatmen ferry passengers to the bird sanctuary of Blakeney Point, or to observe basking seals, or to the National Trust nature reserve. Blakeney (5 miles) offers shops, inns, good walking and water sports. The coast itself is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, offering wide sandy beaches at Wells-next-the-sea and Holkham, where there is also a pretty pine forest. For art lovers, Holkham Hall holds a good collection of paintings within its Palladian exterior - including canvases by Van Dyck, Rubens and Gainsborough. Within the grounds - quietly grazed by deer - there is plentiful birdlife, and from atop the mound where an 80ft obelisk rises, visitors can view both the hall and its triumphal arch.
For walkers the North Norfolk Coastal Path is ideal, or an alternative is the nature trail in the Georgian market town of Holt. Sheringham is for activities such as golf, swimming at the Splash aqua pool, a visit to Sheringham Hall, a ride on the North Norfolk steam railway, relaxing on a Blue Flag beach or strolling down the promenade and around the pier. Seaside attractions, shops and inns can be found at Upper Sheringham, whilst Cromer is only 14 miles away. Stately homes to visit in the area include Felbrigg Hall (a charming Jacobean mansion with walled garden surrounded by parkland) which lies a couple of miles south-west of Cromer, and Blickling Hall (also Jacobean, famous for its long gallery, and superb plasterwork ceilings) and gardens. Accommodation overview: Originally the old rectory, this Grade II listed, 17th-century house stands as one of a pair, and has been fully restored to provide a very grand and elegant country house within a rural setting. The house itself is mainly Georgian and part Tudor, and is set in one acre of delightful mature gardens, which make an ideal retreat for taking a pleasant stroll in the evening after dinner. The holiday property has many original and unusual features, including a grand piano in the entrance hall, full length murals in the conservatory and main bathroom, as well as open fire, wood-burning stove, natural wooden floors and a bespoke kitchen/family room. All the rooms have a bright, airy feel to them. The sumptuous furnishings and colour schemes add further to the feel of the house. Walsingham site of the famous Shrine and the Burnham’s with their close associations with Nelson are always a delight and no holiday in North Norfolk would be complete without a visit to the Palladian mansion of Holkham Hall where a herd of about 800 fallow deer roam its vast parkland open all year round and offering pleasant circular walks and cycle and nature trails.
Seal watching boat trips depart from several picturesque fishing villages along the coast the lovely harbour at Blakeney is a joy to visit and there are countless pubs serving freshly caught local seafood. Cromer is renowned for its delicious crab sandwiches and seasonal end of pier show whilst at the seaside resort of Hunstanton the beach appears to go out for ever. Fakenham (5 miles) draws numerous visitors to the races and its friendly weekly market and the Georgian town of Holt boasts fine independent shops while trips to the Queen's Estate at Sandringham and the Norfolk lavender fields are always popular.
An easy drive leads to the medieval city of Norwich with its excellent shops historic buildings and castle museum of local history – the magnificent cathedral and cobbled Elm Hill are not to be missed.
