Accommodation overview: The two adjoining Hall Farm Barns were lovingly converted in 2009 to a very good standard, leaving the original beams exposed. Single-storeyed and adjacent to one another and the owner’s home, set back from the road, close to the scenic Norfolk-Suffolk border in the beautiful Waveney Valley in the heart of East Anglia, 5 miles from the historic market town of Diss. The lovely market towns Bungay and Beccles are within ½ hour’s drive, with access to the Broads National Park and leisurely cruises with day boat hire. Beautiful, historic Bury St Edmunds is 40 minutes and the charming old world holiday resorts of Southwold, Walberswick and Aldeburgh are under an hour away. Visitors may prefer the activities of the Pleasure Beach at Great Yarmouth or the clean sands of Lowestoft or Kessingland beaches. Norwich is a 40-minute drive with its culture, history, restaurants and mix of old-style street market and sophisticated shopping malls. For children, Banham Zoo is 20 minutes by car and Bressingham Steam Museum even closer, and the theme park at Pleasurewood Hills near Yarmouth is an hour. Paintballing, go karting locally. Accommodation overview: Set on the owners’ non-working farm in the pretty village of Horbling, this spacious detached farmhouse and barn conversion are situated in the heart of the Fens, making an ideal touring base for visiting the area’s wealth of historic attractions. Abbotts’ Farm (Ref RI2) has been refurbished to provide comfortable holiday accommodation for families while sympathetically retaining many of its original features, including exposed woodwork, an ornate cornice in the dining room and a traditional farmhouse-style kitchen. There is a second sitting room, a well-stocked library and huge video and DVD collection (including latest releases), providing plenty of entertainment for everyone. Outside is a large, private, rear lawned garden with apple, pear and plum trees, as well as gooseberries which guests are welcome to pick in season, and a large patio with garden furniture and barbecue. Paddock View (Ref REE6) offers ‘upside-down’ style accommodation for a group of four and is furnished with Georgian antiques, but also has a very modern kitchen and bathroom. The flat fenlands make ideal walking and cycling country, an excellent way to view the landscape with its rich farmlands, huge skies and wonderful sunsets; lovely walks can be enjoyed from the doorstep; ample facilities can be found nearby for golf, fishing or horse riding. Within easy driving distance a wealth of interesting places can be discovered, including the delightful old towns of Uppingham, Oakham and Stamford, full of beautiful mellow stone buildings. On the edge of Stamford stands Burleigh House, one of England’s greatest Elizabethan houses. Nearby Spalding is an attractive, Dutch-influenced town and centre of the flower-bulb industry, where the Springfields show gardens and the annual flower festival in May are popular. Other places to visit are the splendid medieval Tattershall Castle (NT), Belton House and Coningsby, noted for its huge one-handed church clock, and the home of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. One of the landmarks of the Fens is the magnificent octagonal lantern tower of St Botolph’s Church in Boston, greeting visitors from miles around. Accommodation overview: In a unique location, these charming barn conversions are surrounded by Suffolk Wildlife Trust’s Lackford Lakes Nature Reserve. The Cart Lodge (ref BVA) stands detached, whilst Lark Lodge (ref BVJ) and Curlew Cottage (ref BVK) adjoin one another. Lackford Lakes is a bird watchers’ paradise, created from reclaimed land beside the River Lark and consists of a diverse landscape with meadow, woodland, reed beds, streams and lakes. There is a never ending list of birds, deer, badgers and sometimes otters. Although located in the peaceful nature reserve, the barns, which have been sympathetically renovated to a high standard, are only 5 miles from historic Bury St Edmunds with its cathedral, abbey gardens and Georgian theatre, and 10 miles from Newmarket where visitors can enjoy a day at the races or visit the National Horseracing Museum. Also conveniently situated for the picturesque villages of Lavenham, Long Melford and Clare. Accommodation overview: Nestling in 15 acres of ancient meadows, woodland and orchard on the slopes of the Alde valley, these three delightful holiday cottages have been sensitively converted from the outbuildings of nearby Cransford Hall. Featuring an Edwardian walled garden, the grounds are a refuge for a variety of wild birds, including owls. Of individual style and character, the cottages boast exceptionally well-equipped kitchens and fittings, furnishings and fabrics of the highest quality. Each has its own private garden area with furniture, all enjoy shared use of a games room with full-size snooker table, pool table, table tennis and a children’s area with toys and games. There are excellent walks, too, and facilities for croquet and other lawn games. The owner, who lives nearby, is a gourmet cook and offers evening meals for delivery to the cottages (only by prior direct arrangement). Within walking distance is the village of Bruisyard with its Saxon church. Framlingham (4 miles) is a small market town with shops, restaurants and inns; in its picturebook setting, the 12th-century castle dominates the town. Sutton Hoo, with its new visitor centre, is just a 20-minute drive away. Aldeburgh (about 12 miles) is popular for sailing and famous for its music festival and concerts at Snape Maltings. The coastal area is an excellent one for bird-watching, particularly at the RSPB reserve of Minsmere (10 miles). Sports centre, golf and riding all within 20 minutes’ drive.
