The village shop and inn are within walking distance, with championship golf, a sailing club and the uncrowded sandy beaches of the coastline less than 1 mile distant. This area of North Norfolk is a haven for wildlife, with excellent walking and bird-watching amid the nearby salt marshes and sand dunes a must for enthusiasts. Boat trips can be taken from Brancaster Staithe, bound for the RSPB and Nature Reserve Sanctuary of Scolt Head Island, while further along the coast at Blakeney Point trips can be taken to observe the basking seal colonies. Hunstanton is 6 miles, for a traditional day by the seaside; activities here include a cliff-top golf course, a lighthouse, the popular Sea Life Centre and fun fair, an indoor heated swimming-pool and all manner of water sports. Also well worth a visit is Wells-next-the-Sea (8 miles); this working fishing harbour is particularly famous for its fresh seafood and many of the pubs and restaurants have the catch of the day on their menus. A drive out into the countryside can take in many stately homes and gardens, including Holkham Hall, Houghton Hall and the Royal Sandringham Estate, open to the public when the Royal Family is not in residence. To make the stay even more relaxing, the owners are able to offer catering and housekeeping options. Each property boasts stunning features including oak timbers, individually decorated rooms, with each bedroom having its own TV and either DVD or video. Outside each property there is a large enclosed decked area with lovely views across the fields, which makes the perfect place for enjoying an al-fresco meal or glass of wine. All properties have large open-plan reception rooms, which create the feeling of space. There is also a large heated indoor swimming pool located in a detached barn within easy walking distance. For active groups there is karting, the ‘Go Ape’ aerial assault courses, clay pigeon shooting and paintballing locally. For something more relaxing, pamper days can be booked at the Aqua Sana Spa in Elveden Forest or local beauty therapists will make home calls. Ideally placed for exploring East Anglia; the Suffolk Heritage coast and the North Norfolk coast are easily reached. Ideal for families, Monsters Indoor Playcentre, Banham Zoo and Bressingham Gardens and Steam Museum are minutes away. Further afield, but definitely worth a visit are Dinosaur Adventure Park, Africa Alive, Ickworth House, Park and Gardens (NT) and Wroxham Barns with its shops, children’s fairground and petting farm. Interesting places include Norwich with its cathedral and castle museum, and Bury St Edmunds - one of the prettiest Georgian towns in Suffolk. Wyken Vineyards has a regular Saturday farmers’ market as well as walks and tours. Sedgeford Hall, an elegant Grade II listed property, reputed to be one of the county’s finest examples of the Queen Anne period, occupies a peaceful and secluded setting amidst 1,200 acres of glorious woodland and farmland which border the Royal Estate of Sandringham. Nestling in a sheltered valley, three of the holiday cottages are separately set in the 6-acre grounds, with Sweet Briar situated close to the estate’s main gates. The West Wing forms a large part of the owner’s delightful Queen Anne home. There is also a magnificent indoor heated swimming pool with changing facilities and an elegant sitting area. All of the properties are over 200 years old and have been furnished and equipped to a high standard, with great attention being paid to detail to ensure they have retained their very individual styles. The expansive grounds are a delight and visitors to Sedgeford Hall may wander around them at their leisure. Many people come to this part of Norfolk simply for its connection with the Royal Family. Sandringham House, bought by Queen Victoria for her son Edward, has become famous as the Christmas residence of the Royals.
